Why Does Porpoise Nitrifying Bacteria Smell Bad?

The strong or unpleasant smell you notice from Porpoise Nitrifying Bacteria is completely normal and actually a sign that the product is active and working properly.

Porpoise contains live beneficial bacteria, primarily Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, which are responsible for breaking down harmful ammonia and nitrite in your aquarium. These bacteria are cultured in a nutrient-rich solution and stored in a dormant state. The odor is a natural byproduct of the bacterial culture and the organic compounds used to keep them alive.

Just like yogurt or fermented products, the presence of bacteria creates a natural scent. It may be earthy, sulfur-like, or musty, but this does not mean the product is spoiled or ineffective.
